In Victoria's far East Gippsland, logging has started in old growth forest on Granite Mountain.

This forest is completely untouched, giant trees have thrived here for centuries. GECO submitted a report to the Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio in December last year, documenting the old growth forest in the area and calling on her to step in and prevent the logging. Sadly logging has gone ahead.

On Monday January 21 GECO set up a paeceful blockade of the forest. A courageous person is sitting up a tripod structure that is blocking access to the logging site. Since Monday not a single tree has been cut down.

In November 2016, environmental research group Fauna and Flora Research Collective took Supreme Court action and secured a legal injunction to halt logging in the ancient Kuark forest. Their lawyers are arguing that the Victorian government has not met their legal obligations to ensure 60% of old growth wet and damp forest is protected.

Despite the legal action against the Victorian Labor government for failing to meet their obligations, they are continuing to log untouched ancient forests.

Please call the Environment Minister and Agriculture Minister today to let them know that logging old growth in the 21st century is not on.
